Many Design, Technology and Business students are looking to the fashion industry, but Emma Tjørnelund chose the Danish Society of Engineers, IDA, - and showed them and herself that her skills make a difference in many industries. They are one of five nominees for the KEA Internship of the Year award.

Emma

Emma Tjørnelund went off the beaten track when she chose to apply for an internship with IDA. But so did the marketing department of the Danish Society of Engineers – they had never had interns before, and certainly not considered that a Design, Technology and Business student specialising in Marketing & Communication Design could be something for them:

'We hadn't even considered that Emma's programme could be used with us, so it was a bit of an eye-opener for us. Emma has contributed very well and it has been a pleasure to have her on an internship. We put great emphasis on giving her a concrete case where she could use her skills and tools from her studies. In addition, it was important for us to contribute a case that would not only give her experience in strategy and marketing, but that would also count on her CV. Emma entered the task with great commitment and came up with some very creative solutions, which she also helped to implement," says Anne Breusch, Marketing Consultant at the Danish Society of Engineers, IDA.

Many Design, Technology and Business students choose an internship in the fashion industry, and since it was the first time that the department in IDA had an intern, Emma was very excited about the internship:

"From the outset, I was given a major project, which concerned the implementation of a new Employer Branding strategy, which the company had wanted to become a reality for a long period of time. This meant that I was given the opportunity to initiate the project based on the professional knowledge I came with from KEA. During the process, I have had ample opportunity to spar with skilled employees/colleagues, which has helped to develop me at a higher professional level," says Emma and continues:

"Personally, it has strengthened my motivation to aim high. It has been great to experience that you as a student can contribute some relevant professional knowledge that can benefit the company and create value. I was able to bring along a new and professional knowledge from my studies, which has helped to illuminate the tasks from a different angle. In my internship at the Danish Society of Engineers, IDA, I have gained a deep insight into the business world, which has certainly helped to strengthen my ability to see how theoretical knowledge can be turned into value for a company."

In addition to Employer Branding, Emma also focused on how content marketing plays an important role when it comes to implementing new initiatives. She drew up a tactical media plan and worked on a media strategy based on online platforms and SoMe, where she also made use of the graphic tools from her studies at KEA.

The jury noted that both she and IDA dare to choose something other than the majority, and that she actually produces something:

"At first sight, IDA and a Design, Technology and Business student may not seem to be the perfect match – but they turn out to be. Other students may be inspired by it, so they orient themselves more widely when applying for internships, and they are not put off by the fact that the company is 'boring', but instead focus on whether the tasks are exciting and instructive, and whether there are skilled and committed colleagues who can contribute to the student's learning.

Emma is not just someone's assistant for three months, but enters the production department and she has a good understanding of how to create value. She's succeeded in seeing what she's producing being used for something. She's well integrated into the team, people listen and she's taken seriously."

Emma and IDA are one of five nominees for the KEA Internship of the Year award. We'll announce all five nominees in the coming days. The winner of KEA Internship of the Year will be announced on 22 April.
